About Us
New York’s Capital-Saratoga-Adirondack region is a wonderful place to live work and play. It offers a wide array of opportunities for individuals of all abilities, and with recent accessibility guidelines in place, the future looks even brighter. However, as we all know, what is well-considered accessible by one person’s standard, may pose an unintentional barrier to an individual with a disability.
The Upstate Access Network’s mission is to provide individuals with disabilities an online and in-print quick reference accessibility guide to end user based information for area attractions. Information that is not only based on current access codes, but also assessed and rated from the end user’s point of view - the individual with a disability. The online network will also serve as a dynamic and interactive information exchange and peer support community. The Upstate Access Network is a grass roots effort where the ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities through increased access to information and enhanced peer support.
Our approach to creating an accessibility guide based on true user perspectives is a unique new asset for individuals with disabilities in the Capital-Saratoga-Adirondack region. It features area attractions including various recreational and social opportunities such as: health, fitness and sports programs and events, outdoor parks, sites, trails and attractions, as well as dining, entertainment and lodging opportunities. Each item has its access information clearly and easily displayed with ratings based on both current codes and end user perspectives. The end user also plays a key role in providing prospective visitors with real time, first hand feedback through the user/visitor comment areas for each item. Outdoor attractions include additional ratings and descriptions to accommodate the inherit differences in natural features and individual abilities.
As we progress, the Upstate Access Network will also feature a current and upcoming local events calendar, an information exchange area, and a classified section for equipment, vehicles, home care and more. Information and peer support will be available in a wide range of topics including: access codes, home and vehicle modification, and leisure activities including accessible gardening and landscaping.
The goal is simple, the need is obvious and the benefits are many. For this to be successful it will take input from all of us, our families and friends, volunteers and dedicated members of the community. Our success will be judged through improved independence, self image, and a positive reassurance for all individuals with disabilities.
We welcome feedback from all interested parties; those familiar with access codes, accessible attractions or anyone just wanting to know more. For questions or more information contact us below.
